Couple's 3 Months Stay at Pangkor Hotel

PANGKOR ISLAND: This year may be Visit Malaysia 2007 but for an elderly Norwegian couple, their stays here are an annual affair.

Arriving for their sixth visit to the island, Sir Leif Aagaard and Lady Kari Aagaard were given a warm welcome by former badminton great Tan Yee Khan and his hotel staff on Wednesday.

“Every time we visit the island here, we feel much younger than our actual ages,” said Kari. Both she and Leif are 87 years old.

“We come here every year because we love the island. The people are friendly, the food is delicious and the scenery is beautiful.”

“Sea View Hotel (and Holiday Resort) has become our second home during the winter season because it is close to the sea and is cheap. The staff here treat us like family.”

Kari, who fell in love with the island since her first visit in 2001, said: “Pangkor Island is a paradise. Everything here is nice.”

During their three-month stay, the couple will keep busy with various activities like swimming, kayaking, canoeing and taking walks along the beach.

Known to the staff as “grandpa and grandma,” the couple were also greeted by hornbills that visit the hotel in the mornings and evenings.

Tan, who is managing director of the hotel, said the hornbills had been the latest attraction for many visitors.

“I expect more local and foreign visitors this year,” said Tan, whose hotel also provides various activities such as beach volleyball and island trips.
